Here is an early 20th century Wolf Permissible Safety Lamp with the aluminum top stamped by a mine inspector. The full stamp reads, “.W.H.H.& MINE.INSPECTOR. P.D.10-24. 1909”. It is most likely “.W.H.H.” are the initials of the person who owned the lamp and made the stamped inscription. I can’t be sure of the significance of the date “10-24.1909″, but it may be the date the owner was promoted to mine inspector, or possibly the date he was hired into mining. Those are complete guesses, but we can be confident the date was an important one to the person who inscribed this lamp. The lamp came from a Pennsylvania collection, so it is safe to assume the owner was a Pennsylvanian coal miner. If any knowledgable person reading this listing knows more about the possible meaning of any of the details in the inscription, please message to inform me. The lamp has obviously seen use but it isn’t especially beat up. I have not had it apart (don’t have a strong enough magnet on hand to unlock it) but all of the parts appear to be in place. The igniter switch has good spring and the flint still sparks when you twist it. The wick looks old but unburnt. The flame adjustment still turns and moves the wick up and down. The lamp is untested, but I have no reason to doubt that this lamp would work very well if fuel was added to it tomorrow.
